Hornets fall to Beca, Whitehall

The Emmaus High School boys basketball team was on the wrong end of back-to-back Eastern Pennsylvania Conference defeats last week.

The Hornets fell to Bethlehem Catholic 60-46 last Monday night, Jan.12, and followed that with a 53-39 loss to Whitehall last Thursday.

In the game with the Golden Hawks, Emmaus trailed at halftime, 21-20, but Becahi went on a 22-10 run in the third quarter to take a 43-30 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Emmaus juniors Matt Rooney and Jacob Ross each finished with team-highs of 15 points. Lucas Stephan tallied eight points. Noeah Newsome recorded four points and both Tyler Leman and Kellen Hafner rounded out the scoring with two points.

In the matchup against the Zephyrs in what was an important game for postseason hopefuls, Whitehall came out playing better, outscoring Emmaus 17-9 in the opening quarter and took a 32-19 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime. Whitehall led by as much as 20 points (43-23) after three quarters of play.

Each of Newsome and Ben Grochowski totaled seven points to lead the way of a group of 11 Hornets who etched their names in the score column. Ross and Mason Weber both netted five points. Cayden Dencler and Hafner contributed three points and Jayden Swan, Mitch Pisarcik, Nathan Bottjer and Janiel Pena added two points.

Emmaus, which moved to 6-9 overall and 4-7 in the conference, hosted Central Catholic this past Tuesday goes to Southern Lehigh for a nonconference game Thursday and is at Allen Friday.
