Gonzalez, Kloosterman lead way on senior night
Heading into this week the Colonial League basketball season was down to just a final few games that will decide seeding for the boys league tournament, which begins on Friday.
Salisbury will be no lower than the third seed and host a first-round game. With a win Wednesday at Pen Argyl the Falcons would earn the number two seed.
The only two spots that are locked up among the eight available playoff spots are Notre Dame – Green Pond in the top seed, Catasauqua as the fourth seed and Southern Lehigh as the fifth seed.
Last week, Salisbury pulled out a pair of wins against Southern Lehigh and Palisades. The combined margin of victory in the two games was just seven points.
Against the Spartans, Steven Lozada scored 21 points to lead the team to a 54-51 victory.
There’s something about playing Southern Lehigh that brings out the best in Lozada, who scored 23 against the Spartans earlier this season. Salisbury shot 80-percent from the foul line (12-of-15) to help secure the win.
Two nights later, the Falcons nailed nine three-pointers in a 55-41 win over Palisades in their final regular season home game. On senior night, a pair of seniors led the team in scoring with Bryan Gonzalez pouring in 14 and Garritt Kloosterman picking up 12 points in the win.
Salisbury (15-2 Colonial, 19-2 Overall) needs the win at Pen Argyl (6-10, 7-13) to draw into a tie with Northwestern Lehigh (16-2, 17-5). Thanks to a win over the Tigers earlier this season, the Falcons hold the tiebreaker and would finish with the number two seed in the league.
At the bottom of the seeding chart there are four teams alive for three playoff spots. Wilson (10-7) has an edge over Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, and Bangor who are all 9-8 in league play this season.
Lehighton is at Jim Thorpe in a season finale. A Jim Thorpe win puts it into the playoffs because it would hold the tiebreaker over the Indians. If Lehighton wins things get more complicated.
If Salisbury is the two seed, it would host the seventh-seeded team and if the Falcons finish third, they host the sixth-seeded team.
Much of the District 11 Class 4A seeding will depend on the league playoffs because league champions get preferential seeding at the top. Salisbury is currently the top seed, but Northwestern, Wilson, and Lehighton are also in the 4A classification and could steal that top spot with a league title.
Teams from the Schuylkill League and East Penn Conference are also part of the 4A Class and could earn priority seeding with league tournament titles.
