Girls basketball team wins last three games
At the end of the regular season, every team wants to be playing its best going into the postseason.
That is the case with the Parkland High School girls basketball team as it won its final three games of the regular season, all in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
The Trojans began the week with a 63-28 road victory at Central Catholic last Tuesday, then won two home games in a row, including a 58-51 win over Emmaus last Friday and a 68-39 victory against Dieruff.
In the win over the Vikettes, Parkland jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter but took control of the game with a 24-6 second quarter.
The Trojans allowed just 12 points in the second half. Isabella Hallal led the offense with a game-high 13 points and both Cheryllana Cunningham and Aneri McGalla tallied 11 points each. Savannah Gonzalez recorded seven points, Arielle Brown netted six points and Morgan Volpe totaled five points. Gwendolyn McWilliams scored four points and each of Carly Spang, Yana Smaltz and Addison Fritzinger rounded out the scoring with two points.
The game with the Hornets featured two of the top four teams in the conference.
It was back-and-forth throughout as Emmaus held a 19-18 advantage after the opening quarter and then the Trojans went up 31-26 at halftime.
The Hornets responded with a 19-11 run in the third quarter to go back ahead 45-42 after three, but Parkland ended the game on a 16-6 spurt to take the victory. McGalla scored a team-best 17 points and Hallal contributed 16 points. Spang added seven.
In the victory against the Huskies, the Trojans jumped out to an 18-12 lead and then extended it into double figures after outscoring Dieruff 18-11 to go on top 36-23 at the break.
They held the Huskies to just seven points in the fourth quarter and their offense scored 20 to finish off the game.
McGalla once again paced the offense with 16 points, while Fritzinger tallied 12. Cunningham netted eight points and both Hallal and Smaltz had seven points.
Parkland finished the season with a 16-4 overall record and 14-2 mark in the conference, earning the four seed.
The Trojans will host the fifth seed, Nazareth, in the EPC quarterfinal round Friday night.
