Harriet Meckes, 91, of Northampton, died Feb. 9, 2026, in the inpatient hospice unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Allentown. She was the wife of the late Donald W. Meckes.

Born in Dannersville, she was a daughter of the late Marcus and Beatrice (Mann) Hilberg.

She attended Nazareth High School through her junior year and graduated from Northampton High School in 1952. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from East Stroudsburg University and later completed her master’s degree at Lehigh University.

She grew up working hard on her family’s farm. She devoted her career to education, teaching third and fourth grade in Whitehall-Coplay School District for 28.5 years, until her retirement in 1997.

She was a member of Emmanuel’s Lutheran Church, Bath.

She was a member of Quota USA, Northampton chapter, and was a 57-year member of Rose Croix Chapter 125, Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by a son, Scott and wife Patti; a daughter, Donna Newhart and husband Alan; two granddaughters, Jessica Lovitto and husband Michael and Kristen Espinoza and husband James; a grandson, Marcus Newhart; three great-grandchildren, Olivia and Hudson Lovitto and Kaysen Espinoza; a sister, Bernice Bollman; and a companion of 20 years, John Bahnick.
