Fighting Hunger: Spread kindness through small acts
BY SHARI NOCTOR
Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative president
A couple times a year, I write about being kind to others. A simple smile, holding a door open for someone or calling someone just to say hello uplifts the human spirit and makes their day.
Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative has been so blessed with fantastic volunteers, great monetary and food donors and a very compassionate community who work together to help us achieve our mission of alleviating food insecurity in Whitehall and Coplay.
My quote is always, “Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative is making a difference in people’s lives.” And we truly are doing this!
Everyone involved with WCHI and our programs has been kind to others and has been touched in one way or another. Volunteers give their time and talents, donors give their treasures, and our guests gives us smiles, tears and thankfulness that people genuinely care about them. Everyone needs help in their lives at one time or another.
My favorite quote by far is, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has,” from Margaret Mead.
Other quotes I like include the following.
“Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person’s life,” Jackie Chan said.
“You cannot do kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late,” Ralph Waldo Emerson said.
“Because that’s what kindness is. It’s not doing something for someone else because they can’t but because you can,” Andrew Iskander said.
“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward — safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you,” Princess Diana said.
I frequent the Whitehall Wawa for iced coffee. I always hold the door open for someone, and sometimes someone holds the door for me. I always say thank you and have a great week! Smiles are exchanged by both of us.
Then I notice others witnessed this and start to do the same thing. You, too, can make a difference in someone’s life as simple as a smile.
Remember to be kind. Some day you may need that nice smile, a door being opened for you or food.
Would you, your business, your social club, your faith-based community, your school or other group consider doing a food drive for us? Any amount of food would be greatly appreciated.
WCHI can always use box cereal, instant oatmeal, pancake mix, canned fruit, canned black and kidney beans, chicken noodle and other soup varieties.
All food donations can be dropped off inside the foyer on the right side at the Re/Max Unlimited office, 1080 Schadt Ave., Whitehall. The office is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Monetary donations made payable to WCHI are also appreciated and can be mailed to WCHI at the above address.
Thank you all for helping WCHI help our community.
