Lehigh Valley All-Star Series
For the 69th time the City League and the Suburban League met in the Lehigh Valley All-Star series and for the 24th time the City League beat the Suburban League by winning the best of 5 series, three games to one. The series record now stands at Suburban 45 wins and the City 24 wins.
Game 1
With three doubles in the first inning, the City jumped out to a 2-0 lead. City added a run in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Four straight hits in the fourth inning expanded the lead to 6-0. A run in the sixth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning gave the city a 9-0 lead. Suburban scored one run in the eighth inning and one run in the ninth inning; however, it was not enough as the City League won game 1 by a score of 9-2. Blair Weller led the City team with five hits, all doubles.
Game 2
The City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Suburban team responded with a triple, double, triple, double combo to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead. Suburban added two runs in the third inning and 1 in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. The City team scored one run in the seventh inning as the Suburban team won game 2 by a score of 6-2.
Game 3
City used four hits and a Hit by Pitcher to take a 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Suburban responded with four doubles in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Suburban took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. City struck back with three-straight doubles in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Suburban had runners on first and second in the ninth inning and one out, when Tom Dormida hit a Double Play to end the game. The final was City 5-4, giving City a 2-1 advantage. Dave Shannon, Blair Weller and Stan Czeck all went 2-4 to lead City.
Game 4
A triple and two doubles in the top of the second inning provided City with 2-0 lead. In the top of the seventh inning with a runner on second, Whitey K. slammed a 2-run homer to increase the lead to 4-0. With 2 doubles in the bottom of the seventh the Suburban team narrowed the score to 4-1. City team added a run in the top of the ninth to win 5-1 and take the All-Star series 3-1. Blair Weller had three doubles, a triple and a Little Out in this game.
This was the 69th meeting of the two teams.
Leading hitters for the City League were Blair Weller 11-18, Whitey K 4-6 with a HR, Stan Czeck and Jason Rehm both 5-14 and Herb Gates 3-7.
The Suburban League was led by Brian Frankenfield 7-15, Jen Erkinger 5-15 and Butch Silfies 4-12.
For the night the City team had 50 hits while the Suburban team had 35 hits.
