Canes hope to push wrestlers to regionals

Liberty’s wrestling roster doesn’t feature any returning regional qualifiers, but the Hurricanes hope that changes this weekend on their home turf at Memorial Gymnasium.

With the District 11 3A tournament taking place on Friday and Saturday, head coach Brandon Hall and his group hope to stay alive and push wrestlers through to regionals with top five finishes.

“I expect us to compete in all aspects for six minutes or more each time they step on the mat,” said Hall of this weekend’s expectations. “We hope we push everyone through to regionals but that isn’t realistic in this district. We have several wrestlers who will push to get on the podium. Should be a fun weekend of wrestling.”

The ‘Canes roster for this weekend looks like Max Milia (107); Elijah Heimbach (114); Joey Miller (121); JT Solano (127); Ben Miller (133); Jose Rodriguez (139); Elijah Williams (145); Ben Reid (152); Daniel Rivera (160); Ethan Estojak (172); Ben Jebran-Cruz (189); Anthony Martin (215) and Jason Doughty (285).

Heimbach (27-7), a junior, comes into districts as the only Hurricane to medal last year at districts, taking sixth, but falling a spot short of qualifying for regionals.

Freshman Max Milia (107) comes in with a 25-4 record and is one of the Hurricanes favorites to medal. John Solano (18-10), Ben Miller (18-11), Ben Reid (19-11) and Dan Rivera (17-13) will also be in the running for medaling.

“Some tweaks for each kid but generally we want to make sure we are healthy physically and have the right mental approach for the postseason,” said Hall about this weekend. “Having a dual last week is a benefit as we get another opportunity to compete and it helps keeps kids’ weight in check.”
