BC falls in EPC finals
Early in the fourth quarter of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference girls basketball final, Bethlehem Catholic and Easton were tied, 30-30, and that’s when the pandemonium began for the conference rivals who split their games during the regular season.
“It was chaotic,” said Becahi coach Arnold Alleyne. “You know, the game got tight. Credit to both defenses. We couldn’t get anything. We were all out of sorts. But they made one more play than we did.”
With three seconds left, a Becahi foul put Easton freshman Eva Jordan on the foul line where she sank the second of two free throws to give the Red Rovers a 35-34 victory over the Hawks and the EPC championship.
Easton coach Dave Lutz called a timeout with 2:36 left in the game. For the four minutes prior, it was a game of turnovers, missed shots, and bad passes on both sides until Jordan scored with 1:45 left.
Becahi lost the ball on their next possession, and Melina Cole’s free throws put Easton ahead, 34-30.
Brooklyn Lewis brought the Hawks within two points on two free throws, forced a turnover, but was then called for a walk.
Becahi forced another turnover but missed a shot that went out of bounds off of Easton.
After a Becahi timeout, Nickischer’s inbound to Aliyah Brame tied the game with eight seconds left.
On Easton’s possession, Jordan was fouled, setting up the game-winning point.
“Very nervous,” said Coach Alleyne. “They second-guessed themselves, but we had a chance, and I’m proud of the kids. We played all four quarters, played the whole game. I just told them to stay together, keep their heads up, and we have more basketball to play. This will make us better.”
Easton took a 25-18 lead early in the third quarter, but Becahi went on a 9-0 run with five points from Kamryn Gallis and two apiece from Leah Ault and Ayva Radande.
Nickischer had a 3-pointer earlier in the quarter.
Becahi scored the first eight points of the game and kept Easton’s Gabby Wismer, who appeared distressed throughout the first half, on the perimeter.
Four straight points from Easton’s Nat Amato gave the Red Rovers a 20-18 halftime lead.
Both teams will compete in the District XI Girls Basketball Championships, which are scheduled to begin this week.
