Area boys teams set for district playoffs
The District 11 basketball tournament gets underway this week and Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic are both looking to make runs to extend their seasons to the PIAA playoffs.
The Hurricanes (15-9) enter the 6A bracket as the sixth-seed and play in Saturday’s quarterfinal round against third-seeded Nazareth (19-5) at Easton.
The other matchup on that side of the bracket is second-seeded Pocono Mountain West (20-3) taking on seventh-seeded Whitehall (11-12).
The top four teams in 6A move on to the PIAA playoffs and if the Hurricanes can survive their opener against Nazareth, they’ll lock in a top four finish.
The top part of the bracket features EPC champion and top-seeded Northampton (21-4), who face the winner of the eight-nine matchup between Pocono Mountain East (11-11) and Stroudsburg (11-11).
Parkland (19-6) and Allen (16-7) square off in the four-five matchup.
The Trojans are going for their fifth straight District 11 6A title.
In 4A, Bethlehem Catholic (12-10) enters as the fourth-seed and takes on fifth-seeded North Schuylkill (13-9) in Friday’s quarterfinal round.
Colonial League champion Northwestern (20-5) is the top-seed and gets a first round bye and will get the winner of the Beca-North Schuylkill showdown on February 24.
Salisbury (21-3) is the second-seed and gets seventh-seeded Wilson (12-11) in the quarters and third-seeded Central Catholic (12-11), who have won three straight district crowns, squares off against sixth-seeded Lehighton (13-10).
The top three teams in 4A advance to the PIAA tournament.
The 4A semifinals are Feb. 24 with the championship and consolation on Feb. 28.
The 6A semifinals are Feb. 25 with the championship and consolation games on Feb. 28 as well.
