For the first time in five years, Bethlehem Catholic left the PIAA team wrestling championships without any hardware.
The Hawks run of five straight state titles came to an end on Saturday when they fell to eventual state champion Franklin Regional 37-31 in the semifinals.
That set up a consolation bout with District 11 foe Nazareth and the Blue Eagles came away with their second win in as many weeks, topping the Hawks 37-21 en route to taking third place.
“I thought most of the guys performed admirably,” said head coach Mike Cole. “Unfortunately, we are really banged up and missing a few kids. At that level we would need everyone to be competing in order to have a shot at winning. The effort was good though.”
The Hawks were without Jack Cole and Jaden Santiago throughout the tournament and missed Zach Papcsy in Saturday’s duals.
In the loss to Franklin Regional, the Hawks gave up too many bonus points. From 152-to-Heavyweight, Beca lost five of seven bouts, losing by fall in four and giving up a tech fall in the other.
In their rematch with Nazareth, the gap widened from a 10-point defeat at districts to 16 points a week later.
With two weeks off to prepare for districts, the Hawks hope they can heal up and get to full strength as close as possible for a second run at postseason hardware.
