Girls hoping to build for next season

Northampton’s girls’ basketball season was a work in progress.

The Konkrete Kids had a few new faces in their lineup, and they worked through a transitional period. After falling to Freedom Monday, they finished the season 6-16.

They ended a six-game losing streak with a 46-31 victory over Pocono Mountain East. They also defeated Whitehall which was their final win of the season before losing their last four.

Yet, head coach Jeff Jacksits sees his team taking a slow, overall approach this season.

“In each game we have to learn what works best against our opponent and take advantage of that opportunity,” noted Jacksits a few weeks ago. “I think our main problem is that we are not patient enough.

“We work on it during practice but when it’s a game situation everything seems to get sped up, which leads to some bad shots and turnovers. The girls are working hard to remedy this and hopefully we can improve our play over these last few weeks.”

Jacksits has relied on senior center Isabella Pecuch, whose game has steadily risen since her transfer from Parkland after her freshman year.

“Izzy has really improved her inside game,” boasted Jacksits about Pecuch. “She has been able to make moves with either hand, which really helps against the taller girls she has faced in almost every game.

“Her midrange shooting has also improved significantly. She is very consistent from 18 feet, which is an advantage for her when we try to get the big girls away from the lane area. Her leadership has been great, and she always tries to lead by example.”

Pecuch has been playing with a better sense of self-assurance. She plans on pursuing a career as a physician assistant, but hasn’t chosen college. The future of her basketball career will depend on where she attends college.

“I feel more confident but definitely could improve,” said Pecuch. “I feel I could be more aggressive driving the lane, but I feel this year I have got to the foul line a lot more than past years.”

Pecuch was confident in her teammates all season.

“We had a couple of rough games but we had a great win on our senior night,” beamed Pecuch. “Hopefully we can keep that momentum going into our next couple of games.”

Jacksits also is confident his team can turn the corner with a better basketball IQ and consistent play down the stretch which can be a building block for next season.

“We had a couple of rough games but we had a great win on senior night,” he said.

“The chemistry between the girls has gotten better since the start of the season. Our problem is finding consistency. We need to become better students of the game.”
