Catty girls set for Notre Dame
For the Catasauqua girls’ basketball team, facing Notre Dame again isn’t anything new.
In fact, the same can be said for the boys’ team that has had seemingly countless battles against the Crusaders over the years.
Yet, like last year, Wednesday night’s clash against Notre Dame will be another big one. Notre Dame ended Catasauqua’s season last year, 38-35, in a distinct Class 3A subregional.
Catty’s Rough Riders will face Notre Dame’s Crusaders in a Colonial League semifinal at Whitehall. The Rough Riders will enter the game with a 18-5 record, while the Crusaders have a 19-4 record.
In the Colonial League quarterfinal, Catasauqua stopped Palmerton, 52-37, and Notre Dame defeated Southern Lehigh, 64-33.
During their earlier meeting this season, Notre Dame won 38-27 on Dec. 19.
Catty head coach Tara Belfield stated that her team was playing at a different level in December than they are currently.
“When we played Notre Dame, it was very early in the season and we were not playing the type of basketball that we are now,” said Belfield. “We have gotten to a point where we are figuring out how to win the close games.”
Belfield will look to leading scorer and senior Hailey Jenkins, who is averaging better than 21 points per contest for the Roughies. Jenkins was recently named the Colonial League Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Jenkins was limited by Notre Dame’s defense during their first meeting in December.
“Hailey only scored nine points in that game,” said Belfield. “Whatever they did I am sure they’ll try it again.”
Belfield believes her team’s zone defense can keep Notre Dame in check.
“When we play our 3-2 zone defense, the entire team looks really good,” added Belfield. ”They are a good outside shooting team, so we are going to have to focus on getting out on shooters.”
