N. Whitehall Twp. man dies after being shot in standoff with police

A 27-year-old North Whitehall Township man has died after being shot by troopers during a standoff which occurred around 11:03 a.m. Jan. 24 in the 2800 block of Rockdale Road, North Whitehall Township.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio said in a press release, the man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. Jan. 24 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

According to Buglio, the man died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained during the officer-involved shooting.

Buglio said an autopsy was completed on Jan. 27.

The cause of the man’s death is a gunshot wound to the head, he said.

Buglio said a final ruling on the manner of his death will be made upon completion of the investigation and following consultation with the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

According State Police Troop M, Bethlehem, troopers were dispatched to the Rockdale address for a report of a disturbance involving a man with a gun.

Police say upon arrival, troopers observed the North Whitehall Township resident seated in the driver’s seat of 2009 Toyota Camry in the driveway of the residence, allegedly holding a handgun.

While on scene, troopers established a perimeter around the vehicle and attempted to make contact with the man to peacefully exit the vehicle.

During this time, the man discharged the gun from the car, more than once, and also pointed the gun at troopers multiple times.

The Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team arrived on scene and attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution with the man.

Police said at approximately 2 p.m., the man discharged his gun from the vehicle and a SERT member shot him.

The man was treated at the scene by Northern Valley EMS who transported him to Lehigh Valley Hospital for his injuries. The were no injuries to law enforcement.

In addition to the coroner’s office, this incident is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Major Case Team, Lehigh County Homicide Task Force and the assistance of the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.
