Northampton swimmers sweep Allen
The Northampton varsity swimming and diving team turned in a dominant performance last Wednesday evening, sweeping William Allen in a home meet highlighted by depth, balance, and strong relay swims.
The Northampton girls claimed a 112–51 victory, while the boys earned a convincing, 137–38 win, controlling the meet from the opening relays through the final events.
The girls opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Brooke Spadaccia, Elizabeth Sponsler, Sophia Kostik, and Ania Duarte-Castillo touched first. Amelia Sommons followed with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle and later added a win in the 100-yard freestyle, setting the tone for Northampton’s middle-distance success.
Gabriella Medina had a standout night for the Konkrete Kids, capturing first-place finishes in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-butterfly. Kostik added multiple podium finishes, including a second-place swim in the 200 individual medley and 100-yard butterfly. Northampton also swept both freestyle relay events, closing the girls’ meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Adding to their first place points totals, senior Brooke Spadaccia took first in the Girls 50-yard freestyle event with fellow senior swimmer Elizabeth Sponsler also pulling in a win in the 100-yard Breaststroke race. Yianna Gougoustamos claimed a decisive win in the 500-yard freestyle, and freshman Sarah Issac was first to the wall in the 100-yard backstroke event.
On the boys’ side, Northampton showcased its depth early with wins in both the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle. Josiah Hippert, Joseph Kennedy, and Tobias Scott finished 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, while Henry Schoeneberger and Reed Burkhart led a strong showing in the 200-yard individual medley.
Logan Saylor paced the sprint events, winning the 100-yard freestyle and later taking first in the 100-yard backstroke. Nathan Scheirer and Schoeneberger followed closely in the butterfly, giving Northampton a sweep of the top two spots.
Tobias Scott claimed the 500-yard freestyle, Nicholas Isaac rocketed to first in the 50-yard freestyle sprint, and Mason James displayed his depth and versatility, earning first place in both one-meter diving and the 100 breaststroke events. The boys capped the night with a decisive win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Northampton’s sweeping performance reflected both individual excellence and relay depth, but the highlight of the night came during the meet intermission when the Northampton varsity squad honored 4 of their senior varsity swimmers (Captain Nicholas Isaac, Captain Elizabeth Sponsler, Brooke Spadaccia and Ania Duarte-Castillo). The team also honored their senior teammate from neighboring Catasauqua, Maliya Walp, who swims with the Northampton team both in practice and at meets. All the senior swimmers were joined on deck by their families as coach Cullen Mentzell shared his memories of their time on the team and the swimmers’ thoughts about their favorite times during the season and future plans. Amid cheers and well wishes from their teammates, these 5 senior swimmers added a memorable night to a dual win, creating a special event that none of these swimmers will likely soon forget.
