Freedom and Liberty’s girls basketball teams met in a city rivalry match on Jan. 30 when the Hurricanes topped the Patriots, 62-39.
Liberty had a 20-point lead at halftime after a 14-0 run to end the second quarter.
Freedom took over the third quarter with five straight points followed by an 8-0 run on a combination of points by Sara Kokolus, Payton Besecker, Saige Carter, and Gabby Sena.
With momentum on Freedom’s side, the Patriots were about to force a turnover when Liberty coach Jarrett Carnes quickly called a timeout as Christina Ramos dribbled down the sideline.
Liberty’s Chloe Rumelhart and Ava Kopetskie then combined for five points to end the third quarter and regain momentum for the Hurricanes.
The Patriots were without senior Kate Assad who was injured during Freedom’s game against Northampton on Jan. 9.
Kokolus had 11 points for the Pates.
Kopetskie had a game high 25 points, and Rumelhart added 14 points.
Liberty will have taken on Nazareth to end its regular season on Feb. 2, and Freedom will have faced Northwestern Lehigh on Feb. 3.
Freedom defeated Northampton Monday night 48-43.
Kokolus led the way with 12 points in the win. Assad returned for this contest and added 11 points.
Saige Carter and Olivia Haas each had seven points.
