LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Directors updated on principal roles, student awards

The Whitehall-Coplay School Board met virtually Jan. 26 due to the recent snowstorm that led to school closures across the area.

The meeting opened with a report from a Student Council representative, who noted it was the first week for Megan Pierre in her new role as assistant principal at the high school. Former assistant principal Michael Rile has accepted a new position at the elementary school.

The Student Council report also included updates on winter athletics. The cheerleading team recently placed fourth at districts and advanced to the state competition. Four cheerleaders were also inducted into the district Hall of Fame.

The board recognized January as Board Appreciation Month. Middle school students created a video message thanking board members for their work supporting the district, promoting student safety, providing resources and encouraging school programs and clubs.

The board also honored the Little Zephyrs of the Month from September through December. The students recognized are members of the Class of 2037. District officials explained teachers across all 17 elementary classrooms nominate one student each month who best represents a selected character trait. Monthly themes included responsibility in September, empathy in October, leadership and communication in November and adaptability in December.

Treasurer George Williams presented the treasurer’s report, which was approved unanimously.

In executive business, the board unanimously approved the proposed 2026-27 school calendar.

Under finance matters, the board approved the per capita tax exoneration and tax refund measures, along with the accelerated budget opt-out resolution. All items passed unanimously.

The board also approved the staff handbook for next year, the 2028 Galapagos Expedition Tour and renovations tied to the public library project.

The school board’s next meetings will be held 4 p.m. Feb. 9 and 7 p.m. Feb. 23.
