Sollars, Kids get set for postseason
Through the early going, Korbin Sollars knew that he and his teammates have had some chemistry. The Kids had an impressive start.
Their long-standing friendships also helped them capture the moment.
“I feel that this season has been going pretty good so far,” said Sollars, who is a senior. “We are all definitely on the same page. This is because we’re all friends and all talk a lot outside of practices or games.”
“I’m not surprised that we’ve had a fast start due to the preparation that took place before the season began.”
Sollars, who averaged 7.1 points last season, has raised his offensive output to just over nine points per game playing in the middle, as of a few weeks ago.
He is content to play wherever he is needed.
“I see myself filling whatever role is needed,” stated Sollars. “Whether it’s being aggressive by the basket, playing defense against other bigger opponents, running sets to get the hot hand open, whoever it is, and also knocking down some shots myself.”
Head coach Matt Scholl has been impressed by Sollars not being intimidated playing down low despite being 6-foot-2.
“He plays the five in our defense, and he plays it well,” beamed Scholl. ‘Even though he is only 6-2, he battles with everyone. He boxes out consistently and is a key part of our team.
“He has made his share of big plays for us, like making the game-tying layup in the EPC (East Penn Conference) championship last game.”
However, playing in the post isn’t anything new for him.
“I started playing basketball in kindergarten and have played ever since,” said Sollars. “I usually was the tallest on the team, so I would tend to play down low. Ever since middle school, the program allowed me to also play up top. In AAU, I usually play as a wing.”
Sollars has worked on his game, and he is confident his team can make another postseason run after their 19-10 campaign last year that ended in the first round of the state playoffs. He plans to attend college next season, but is confident this season won’t end quickly.
“Over the summer the team and I prioritized shooting, defense, and execution of the plays,” stressed Sollars. “We are pretty locked in right now.
“We know what it takes to go far in the playoffs, so we’re focused on getting into that mindset to get back to where we were last year.”
