Boys hoops set for key games this week

Northampton’s boys’ basketball success hasn’t been centered around a one-man show.

Instead, the Konkrete Kids have relied on a six-man score that helped carry them to the East Penn Conference (EPC) crown last season, their first title of any kind since 1973.

With four regular-season games left to play, the Kids had an overall 15-3 record and the third seed in the District 11 Class 6A bracket.

Head coach Matt Scholl is well aware of his team’s road to success.

“It has definitely been a true team effort,” beamed Scholl. “We returned six guys who played the majority of the minutes on last year’s EPC championship team, and that experience has mattered. I do think we’re ahead of where we were at this point last season, but winning championships is never easy — especially in a league and district with this level of quality.”

Scholl is optimistic his team can maintain their pace.

“We’re doing a lot of things well right now,” added Scholl. “We’re shooting over 75-percent as a team from the free-throw line, we have five players shooting better than 35-percent from three, and defensively we’ve held our last two opponents to 37 and 30 points. That said, we’re still making some mental mistakes, and if we want to maximize our potential, those have to get cleaned up.”

Senior Leo Regec knows he and his teammates can’t take anything for granted. Besides Regec, other key returnees from last year’s team are seniors Noah Walakovits, Brady Simock, Korbin Sollars, junior Ethan Raphun, and sophomore Jake Raysely.

“I think we can definitely play better as we can always improve,” said Regec. “The team is working hard overall and the chemistry between us is very good. I see myself as how I view everybody else on the team. We’re all leaders who are ready to win.”

Like Regec, Scholl believes his team has to keep their foot on the pedal. The Kids have games this week with rematches against Nazareth (Tuesday) and Bethlehem Catholic (Friday) - both first matchups that Northampton won - and Pocono Mountain West (Saturday). Northampton is behind Nazareth in the district standings, and it will loom as a key game.

“This is a special group, which means expectations are high,” beamed Scholl. “But there’s only one league champion and one district champion. You have to do a lot right, and maybe get a little lucky, to win it. Our goal over the final weeks of the regular season is to put ourselves in a position where we don’t need luck.”
