Boys fall to Hornets

The Liberty Hurricane swim team raised $1,150 for the John Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund during their meet against Emmaus on Jan. 20 in honor of their former teammate who graduated in 2020 before losing his life to diabetes.

The Hurricanes remembered Jones, who loved colorful socks, by wearing blue shirts with the slogan, Knock the Socks off Diabetes, and held a raffle and sold socks in his memory during the meet, won by Emmaus, 112-71 (boys).

“We came into this meet today, realizing we didn’t have the numbers that they had,” said Liberty coach Reik Foust. “We wanted to try and match up some things we’re going to be looking at towards the end of the year, some events that we haven’t swum yet, or what we wanted to start focusing on, whatever it might be. There were some different things that we did.”

The Hurricane boys won their first event of the day with Jonah Korpics, Adam Barlow, Darren Nguyen, and Theodore Shang in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.44.

“I felt great doing that,” said Nguyen of his butterfly. “We were a little bit ahead with Adam doing the breaststroke. He has a really powerful breaststroke that helped us get the win.”

Barlow took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.19.

Jaxson Dorsey won the diving event with a score of 196.15.

Nguyen placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.99, Korpics was first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.02, and Barlow won the 100 breaststroke in 58.86.

The Hurricanes’ last meet of the season is scheduled for Feb. 4 when Liberty will host Freedom.
