WHS boy, girl wrestlers head down the stretch
Both Whitehall’s boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams continue to build momentum toward the postseason.
Whitehall’s boys’ team won all three of its matches during the Spartan Classic at Springfield Township High School last weekend. The Zephyrs blanked Church Farm School, 77-0, as well as downing Great Valley, 51-17, and Red Lion, 54-15. They and Milton Hershey were the lone teams to go undefeated (3-0) at the tournament.
Adam Gasterastos, Tyrell Holt, Willmont Kai, James Hopkins, and Kade Pascoe all went undefeated.
Head coach Tim Cunningham was pleased with his team’s showings.
“We had a good overall team effort,” said Cunningham. “That helped us win the dual meets. All the wrestlers did their jobs. We had kids that won and kids that lost, but we limited bonus points.”
The Zephyrs have been paced by their veteran lineup of seniors Kai (25-1), Hopkins (20-7), Holt (13-8), Pascoe (19-6), junior Gasterastos (16-8), and freshman Semaj Witherspoon (5-2)
Pascoe likes where his team is headed, but he knows his own approach can use some work.
“We had a good tournament as a team,” said Pascoe. “I don’t think the competition was the greatest, but it showed the team how much better we are than we really think.
“As for my season, I think it is going a little bumpy. I don’t think I should have lost to the kid from Liberty recently, but things happen. I just need to improve on finishing my shots.”
Along with his seasoned wrestlers, Cunningham has liked what he has seen from his budding group.
Witherspoon along with freshmen Mason Hopkins (17-10) and Aiden Hannis (7-10), and sophomore Rocco Fonzone (7-12) all have made their mark.
“Our younger guys are making a lot of progress and are a major part of the reason we are successful so far this season,” boasted Cunningham. “Guys like Mason Hopkins, Aiden Hannis, and Rocco Fonzone are working hard and are great for the team.”
On the girls’ side, seniors Jaslyn Feliz, juniors Alemayeliu Fikirselam, Karla Hernandez, Lilly Petuszak, Maryangie Roche-Denis, Alyse Collier, sophomore Ava Peluszak, and freshman Kennedy Huddle have been the core of the team.
The Lady Zephyrs will compete in the East Penn Conference (EPC) championships Saturday.
In their inaugural season, Cunningham has remained positive that a foundation has been laid.
“The girls team is a work in progress being it is our first year with the program,” noted Cunningham. “As long as they continue to work daily to improve and help build the program for the future and continue to work in the offseason, it will be a success.”
