FHS honors HOF class
Freedom recently introduced their newest Hall of Fame class prior to last week’s basketball game against Northampton.
Three individuals and one team were inducted in this year’s class, comprised of Mary Greybush, Seth Watlington, Michael Zito and the 1987 girls’ basketball team.
Below are brief bios on this year’s class.
Mary Greybush: A 1987 graduate, Greybush became the all-time leading scorer in girls basketball with 1,721 points and collected 1,121 rebounds. She was named both the Bethlehem and Freedom High School Female Athlete of the Year in 1987. She continued her education and basketball career at La Salle University where she would go on to score 1,404 career points and garner 712 rebounds. She earned GTE Academic All-American status and was inducted into the La Salle University Hall of Fame and the Big 5 Hall of Fame. She is a retired physician.
Seth Watlington: A 2012 graduate, Watlington was a standout swimmer throughout all four years of high school, competing at both districts and states each season. In 2012, Watlington earned all-state honors by winning the PIAA 3A title in the 100 breaststroke and placed eighth in the 200 IM. Watlington won district titles in 2012 in the same event and set school records. He also set the Parkland pool record and the District 11 record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.28 seconds, a mark that still stands today. For his achievements in the 2012 District 11 meet, Watlington won the Dennis McGinley Award as the top 3A Boys swimmer.
Watlington was also a member of the 400 freestyle relay in 2012 that set a team record. He achieved All-America recognition in the 100 breaststroke and was also a Scholastic All-American. He attended the United States Naval Academy where he swam for his first two years before graduating in 2016 with distinction. He is now a United States Navy Lieutenant stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.
Michael Zito: A 1975 graduate, Zito participated in wrestling, golf and cross country. He was most noted for his wrestling accomplishments. Zito was a three-time District 11 champion in 1973, 1974, and 1975 at 112 pounds. He was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 1975 District 11 tournament. He was a two-time Northeast Regional champion in 1973 and 1975, and a 1973 PIAA runner-up. Zito continued his education and wrestling career at North Carolina State University where he won the 1976 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at 118 pounds. He is currently retired from the PPL Corporation after 35 years of service.
1987 Girls Basketball Team: The 1987 Lady Patriots won the 4A district title and posted a 20-2 conference record and a 21-3 regular-season record. They entered the district tournament as the top seed and held off Parkland for a 52-46 semifinal victory. In the district final, they trailed Pottsville by 11 points late in the third quarter but used a stingy defense and timely scoring that would allow the Lady Pates to outscore Pottsville 23-8 in the fourth quarter and come away with a 61-54 win. The team would gain two more victories in the PIAA 4A tournament before losing to Downingtown in the quarterfinals, the deepest run made by any Freedom team. They finished the season with a 25-4 record.
