Whitney reaches milestone in win

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team opened the new year with wins in its first three games of 2026, including two games in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and a nonconference game.

In the first game of January, Emmaus downed Stroudsburg 81-4 last Tuesday, Jan. 6. The Hornets then beat Pocono Mountain East 60-13 Friday before welcoming Blue Mountain Saturday afternoon and winning 61-26.

The game with the Mounties was over early into the first quarter as Emmaus scored 31 of the first 33 points in that frame. The defense then shut out Stroudsburg in the second and third quarters.

Olive Whitney finished with a game-best 15 points and both Olivia Haberl and Gabby DeVita tallied 12 points. Eva Glover and Gracie Ervin netted nine points and Sierra Stevens tallied six points. Sophia Shutkufski added five points and both Camryn Harp and Makayla McGinnis had four points.

In the win over the Cardinals, Emmaus broke open the game in the first half, outscoring PME 19-4 in the first quarter and 20-4 in the second quarter. McGinnis and Stevens led the way with 11 points apiece. Whitney, DeVita and Gabby East all had eight points.

In the victory against the Eagles, the Hornets once again had a strong first half, outscoring Blue Mountain 28-9. A 26-10 third quarter spurt helped finish off the game. DeVita recorded a team-high 17 points and Stevens totaled 12 points. Both Ervin and Kaitlyn Grochowski contributed seven points.

Emmaus improved to 10-2 overall and 9-0 in the conference.

The Hornets hosted Bethlehem Catholic this past Monday night, travel to take on Whitehall Thursday night and are at Hazelton in a nonconference matchup Friday night.
