Wawa nears completion
Residents of Whitehall Township and surrounding areas won’t have to wait much longer for the anticipated opening date of another Wawa location. After years of waiting and continued progress, Wawa is set to officially open a location this spring at Whitehall Mall, at MacArthur and Mickley roads, where the Sears Auto Center was previously located.
Speedwell Construction has overseen the development of the property, according to officials from the company and signs surrounding the building.
According to Alyson Mucha, a public relations and communications representative from Wawa, “Our new location in Whitehall is under construction and projected to open this spring. To build each store, Wawa invests approximately $7.5 million and employs, on average, 140 contractors and local partners. Once open, each store will employ an average of 35 associates.”
As of press time, the outside of the building is nearly finished, and the stations and setup for the gas pumps have been built; however, no gas pumps have yet been added, and the inside of the building, its logo and complete development of the convenience store have not yet been fully built.
As reported in a June 2024 edition of Whitehall-Coplay Press, the township board of commissioners approved this development at a public meeting. The site is expected to house a convenience store and 16 gas pumps, which is four more than the 2985 MacArthur Road location.
A Jan. 8 Facebook post noted the location has started hiring, seeking “reliable team members who enjoy working in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.” A large hiring sign is now visible on the property as well. Positions at the new location are available for application via Wawa’s website, at careers.wawa.com.
The Facebook post also noted the new store will open in March, but that statement has not been confirmed.
Other Wawa representatives and developers from Speedwell Construction and Washington Prime Group have not responded to Press inquiries on the project.
