Trojans rout ESS

After starting the season on a 7-game winning streak, the Parkland girls basketball team hit a few bumps in the road around the holiday break.

The Trojans suffered their first loss of the season in an East Penn Conference game against Emmaus, 51-45, on Dec. 20.

That setback was the first of what would be three in four games for PHS.

Parkland lost to Red Lion 41-32 on Dec. 23 before beating Liberty 54-32 in the first round of the Parkland Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29. The Trojans suffered a loss to Wilson West Lawn in the tournament title game, 53-24.

They bounced back with a resounding win over East Stroudsburg South Tuesday, 56-6.

In the win over Liberty, Isabella Hallal scored a team-high 13 points, while Katie Sammarco had eight points and three Trojans (Carly Spang, Cheryllana Cunningham, Yana Smaltz) had seven points each.

Against Wilson (9-1 overall; 4-0 Berks County League), Parkland fell behind early and fought from behind the entire game.

The Bulldogs’ lead was nine points at halftime but several Trojans turnovers in the third quarter allowed Wilson’s Violet Houch score eight of her game high 12 points in the third quarter.

All of Houch’s scoring came in the second half. She was the only player to score in double-digits in the game.

“I thought we played well defensively today,” said Parkland head coach Ed Ohlson. “Offensively we obviously struggled. For the first half we did pretty well. We gave up some easy baskets in the second half.”

Cunningham led Parkland with eight points in the loss. Aneri McGalla scored seven points and Spang had five.

In Tuesday’s win over East Stroudsburg South, Parkland opened a 20-2 lead in the first quarter and held the Cavaliers scoreless in the second quarter to lead 32-2 at halftime.

Hallal scored a game-high 12 points in the win with McGallla adding 10 points and Cunningham chipping in with eight points.

Addison Fritziner had six points, all in the first half.

Parkland (9-3 overall; 7-1 EPC) takes on Pleasant Valley Friday before a facing a tough stretch next week with games against Easton (10-2), Dieruff (9-4) and Cumbearland Valley (7-3).
