Trojan girls win Winter Duals

The Trojan girls wrestling team came out of a two-week break from competitions Sunday to win four matches and the Parkland Winter Duals.

Parkland rolled to wins over Panther Valley (64-11) and East Stroudsburg South (57-14) in the first two rounds before facing Emmaus in the tournament title match.

The Trojans dispatched of their East Penn Conference rivals 48-21 in the first-place match.

“We had a very good day,” said Parkland head coach Fran Volpe. “The girls wrestled hard. We wrestled some good competition. Emmaus is a good team.

“Our girls showed that the hard work they’ve been putting in is really starting to pay off. We just keep taking little steps forward each week to get ourselves ready for the postseason.”

The Trojans’ 2025-26 is broken is up into three parts. They had a busy early-season and went 3-0 in dual meets while winning the Escape the Rock Tournament and taking third at the Beast of the East. That was over the season’s first three weeks.

After a two-week break, they’ll have a busy schedule through January before another two-week break before districts.

“We’ve already been tested for the first part of our schedule,” said Volpe. “Now we hit another really rough patch where we have a tournament every weekend and dual meets during the week.

“We’re kind of looking to get the momentum going here the next few weeks, then we dial it back and get ready for the postseason.”

Parkland had momentum all day Sunday at the dual-meet tournament.

In the win over Panther Valley, the Trojans won 11 of 13 bouts with Sydney Laputka, Lily Snook, Saige Rittenhouse, Leila Palmieri, Angelina Spachman, Laura Volpe and Natalie Deutsch all pinning their Panther opponents. Grace Shaffer won my major decision, while Peyton Schneck and Liz Karla Grullon-Vasquez picked up wins by forfeit.

In the win over ES South, Schneck, Laputka, Spachman, Volpe, Deutsch and Chloe Grady won matches by fall. Shaffer earned a win by decision, while Emily Siglin and Taya Daniels won bouts by forfeit.

In the championship match, Parkland got out to a 21-0 lead with pins from Laputka (112), Snook (118) and Rittenhouse (130), along with Teagan Tremba’s win by decision at 124.

Spachman’s pin at 142 and win by decision by Volpe (148) extended the Trojan lead to 30-3. Deutsch sealed the win with a pin at 170 that put her team in front 36-9 with four bouts left.

Grullon-Vasquez (190) picked up a win by forfeit and Schneck (106) pinned her Hornet opponent to finish the match.

The Trojans’ busy January continues this week with a dual meet against Whitehall Wednesday and the Cumberland Valley Duals on Sunday. They’ll also compete in the Lebanon Tournament on Jan. 18.

Parkland will face Emmaus again on Jan. 22 in Orefield.
