Tiger wrestlers compete in IUP tourney
The Northwestern wrestling team beat Catasauqua 58-12 last Wednesday, Jan. 10, and took 16th place in the Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament last weekend.
At the tournament, held Jan. 9-10 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the Tigers finished just a few places behind Emmaus (12th) and Parkland (13th) in the team standings.
Luke Fugazzotto (189) finished second overall in the event. After pinning his first four opponents, Fugazzotto won a 10-3 decision in the semifinals before falling to two-time Class 3A state medalist Michael Spielman (Strath Haven) 7-1 in the title bout.
Vinnie Fugazzotto (172) finished seventh at the tournament by beating Northampton’s Carter Chlebove in the seventh-place match.
Weston Killar (127) finished eighth at the tournament after falling to Berlin Brothers Valley’s Lukas Smith in the seventh-place match.
Bishop McCort took the team title at the tournament, followed by Chestnut Ridge, Northampton, Montgomery and Altoona.
In the match against Catty, the Tigers’ Mackenzie Case, Weston Killar, Braydon Uricchio, Vinnie Fugazzotto, Luke Fugazzotto and Ian Zettlemoyer all won matches by fall against the Rough Riders.
Trent Croll and Chase Sukanick won matches by technical fall for the Tigers. Noah Griffith earned a major decision while Adam Griffith won by decision.
The Tigers improved to 9-2 overall with the win and 4-0 in Colonial League matches. They took on Saucon Valley Wednesday, Jan. 14, after Press deadline. They finish the dual meet regular season against Northern Lehigh on Jan. 21 before competing in the Coal Cracker Invitational on Jan. 23-24 at Jim Thorpe.
