Police officers pull woman from pond

A Lehigh Township woman, who fell in her pond while cleaning it, was rescued after she activated her medical alert system.

The Lehigh Township Police Department posted on its Facebook page that the police department was dispatched to the 3400 block of West Walker Drive 2:36 p.m. Jan. 11. Officers Elias Batihk and Anthony Stinemire arrived on scene and located an elderly woman waving her arms in the air.

With the help of a neighbor, Batihk and Stinemire were able to pull the woman out of the pond and relocate her to her house.

The woman said she was cleaning her pond pump when she accidentally fell in.

“Officer Batihk and Officer Stinemire saved a life today,” the Facebook post said.

Northampton Regional EMS transported the woman to the hospital for medical attention. They said the woman’s body temperature had plummeted to 88 degrees Fahrenheit.

Batihk and Stinemire met with various media outlets early Jan. 12 at the township’s municipal office to answer questions about the incident. They said there would have been a bleak outcome if not for the use of her medical pendant.

“This shows the importance for elderly family members and friends to utilize medical pendants,” the department’s Facebook post added. “Even though the majority of pendant activations that we get are accidental, this incident is proof that they work and could quite possibly save a life.”

Batihk said that upon arrival, the woman’s neighbor, Mark Miles, assisted them in helping rescue the woman from the water and safely moved her into her home.

“She had been in the water for like 20 minutes,” Batihk said. “We had to pull her out of the water and get her into the house.”

Stinemire said the woman is at home and doing well.

The officers heaped praise on Miles, whom they said jumped into the water to stabilize the woman’s waist.

Batihk, who has been with the department for the past 10 years, said he and Stinemire were just doing their jobs.

“Humanity — I’d want someone to do that for my grandmother or my loved one,” Batihk said. “I think anybody would have done that, especially to save a life.”

Stinemire, who has been with the department for the past two years, agreed.

“It’s very nice we are being recognized,” Stinemire said.
