East Allen retains leaders

East Allen Township Board of Supervisors held its biennial reorganization meeting Jan. 5, as required by Pennsylvania law. The meeting, held in January in even years, is designed to hold elections for chair and vice chair of the board and appoint a host of individuals to various positions, set fees and more.

The first position to be filled was that of chairperson of the board. Current board chair, Supervisor Roger Unangst was nominated. He was unopposed and retains the chairperson role.

Unangst was first elected to the board in 1991. His current term as a supervisor will end Dec. 31, 2027.

He is credited with allowing residents to speak about issues at the beginning and the end of supervisor meetings. Unangst ends all supervisor meetings with his friendly trademark directive after a motion to adjourn is passed by telling his four peer supervisors and meeting attendees to “go home.”

Vice Chair Mark Schwartz was reelected to the role. He was unopposed for the seat.

Schwartz has been a supervisor since January 2000, giving 26 years of service to East Allen Township. He demonstrates much knowledge of the issues facing the township and the workings of local government.

After the leadership election, the board voted to appoint a wide array of offices, including Joseph Piperato to the office of the township solicitor, the office of township engineer to James Milot and Brent Green as township manager. Numerous other positions and items were approved by the supervisors.

The next East Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 22 in the township municipal building, 5344 Nor-Bath Blvd. It is a hybrid meeting, with both in-person and virtual options. Visit eatwp.org to review the meeting’s agenda and how to access the meeting virtually.
