Coplay council offers thanks to longtime leader

Coplay Borough Council, at its Jan. 5 reorganization meeting, named Rick Kern as president and Todd Santoroski as vice president.

Kern presented former president, Louis Bodish, with the gavel box he used during his long tenure at the helm. Bodish held the position 2012-26.

At council’s Jan. 13 meeting, Mayor Joe Bundra thanked Bodish for his dedication and service to the borough.

Bundra also shared details on the 2025 usage statistics for the Ironton Rail Trail. Last year, he said, 183,079 travelers logged time on the trail.

Looking to another popular outdoor event, council approved the dates for the summer concert series held at the Stephen J. Burker Memorial Gazebo at Community Plaza, North Second and Chestnut streets. Concerts will be held May 20, June 3, June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, Aug. 12, Aug. 26, Sept. 9 and Sept. 23. The band lineup has not yet been determined.

Santoroski thanked state Rep. Jeanne McNeill, D-133rd, and state Sen. Nick Miller, D-14th, for their assistance with grant funding for pickleball courts, planned for the tennis court area. A total of $181,000 in grants is expected.

In other business, Tyler Bell was approved as assistant fire chief. The approval was tabled during last month’s meeting.

Council approved a towing contract for Ironton Autobody, Yocum Towing & Recovery, Atlas Towing, Hesch’s Towing and A Force 1 Towing.

Council also approved Salvage Inc. as a resource for abandoned vehicles.

The next meetings for borough council are planned for Feb. 3, a workshop, and Feb. 10, a regular meeting. Both start 7 p.m. at borough hall, 98 S. Fourth St.
