FHS girls win three
Freedom’s girls basketball team went 3-for-3 last week with victories over Pocono Mountain West, Northampton, and Whitehall.
The Patriots overwhelmed the Panthers, 56-29, on Jan. 7 at Freedom.
“I liked the intensity that we were able to bring with our pressure, and Saige Carter, even with her being a little bit sick tonight and not being able to be full go, she’s such a great athlete and having her at the top of the press really helps us out and brings a different intensity from them,” said Freedom coach Deanna Radio. “I think when we were able to switch from some of our younger kids and get them some minutes, they really helped us when we switched to our man.”
Kate Assad had a game high 21 points for the Pates.
“You never know where the game goes, and our coach always emphasizes, and we emphasize as a team, to keep our foot on the gas,” Assad said. “We’re coming through, and there’s no stopping. We’re never content, and we always want more for ourselves. We have two big wins to get (Northampton and Whitehall). We’re going to trust each other and play loose, play free, and have fun.”
Sara Kokolus added 12 points for the Pates against Pocono Mountain West.
“Since our eighth grade year when we were playing on the freshman team, all we heard was any loose ball, you’re on the ground, you’re going to get, you’re hustling for, so I guess I’ve always had that mindset that every loose ball is mine,” said Kokolus. “Any chance we had, like, if we got a steal on defense, we ran, and we made a lot of extra passes. If there was an open shot, we got the ball to someone who had a better shot. I think we were unselfish because a lot of people scored tonight.”
Eight players had points for Freedom.
On Jan. 9, 10 players scored for the Patriots in a 40-31 victory over Northampton at Northampton.
The following day, the Patriots topped Whitehall, 60-46, at Whitehall.
“Over the three years that I’ve been here, this senior class is really the group that I started to grow with, and they’ve kind of been through it,” said Coach Radio. “They took their lumps the first two years, and so now, they’re learning how to win, and they’re so good with the younger kids. They’re pulling them through with them, and you can see the chemistry they have on the floor, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
