Boys get win over Southern Lehigh
Liberty’s boys swim team posted a 110-73 victory over Southern Lehigh on Jan. 8 at Liberty.
“I was really surprised,” said Hurricane freshman Jonah Korpics. “I thought it was gonna be really, really close.”
Korpics led off in the 200 medley relay which included Adam Barlow, Darren Nguyen, and John Cornish who had the winning time of 1:39.72.
Nguyen went on to win the 200 freestyle in 1:56.33, Barlow took first place in the 200 IM in 1:58.33, and Cornish won the 50 free in 23.10 and placed second in the 100 free in 51.85.
“We’ve been working on breathing patterns,” said Liberty coach Reik Foust. “We need John (Cornish} to breathe on that first 50. He didn’t take any breaths on the way back down, and he didn’t take his first one until halfway back, and that just kills you for the end of your race. I was super happy with the 51.0. I thought that was a great swim, but I think he’s a 49.0 if he does the breathing right.”
Everett Collins placed first in diving with a score of 190.20.
Nguyen won the 100 butterfly in 54.26.
“Darren’s fly was pretty,” said Liberty coach Reik Foust. “What we’ve been working on with Darren is the front of his stroke. He did that toward the end of his race, started getting up on his elbows, which is what we wanted him to do. Because of that, he had a really good finish.”
Korpics won the 500 free in 5:17.4, as well as the 100 backstroke in 58.87.
“I think I subtracted eight seconds from my best time,” said Korpics of the 500. “I’m pretty good at it, and nobody else really wants to swim it. I swam the 500 right before [backstroke] so that’s really good. It might have been a best time. I’m pretty happy with it.”
Barlow, Nguyen, Cornish, and Quinton Brown combined to win the 200 free relay in 1:32.07.
Barlow took first place in the 100 breaststroke in 58.35.
Despite a strong start, Liberty’s girls swim team fell to Southern Lehigh, 98-87.
Lilah McClarin, Leah Onia, Audrey Bloss-Ferry, and Estella Mikovich opened the meet with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.32.
“When I get up on the block to be the anchor, it’s always nerve wracking,” said Mikovich, “but we had a very good lead, so I think that calmed me down a little bit, knowing I was gonna succeed. It gave us a good baseline to be successful the whole meet.”
Onia won the 200 free in 2:13.39, and Bloss-Ferry won the 200 IM in 2:26.53.
Eva Madeira took first place in diving with a score of 190.15.
Bloss-Ferry, Mikovich, Onia, and McClarin won the 200 free relay in 1:49.55.
McClarin placed first in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.49, and Onia and Mikovich had a one-two finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.43 and 1:16.96, respectively.
“Leah and Estella in the 100 breast swam great races,” said Foust. “Both of them were best times for this year. They started to relax a little bit and understanding that for as hard as they are practicing, it’s gonna make it easier for them.”
