Three Kings Day Maintaining religious roots
Tradition and culture are honored each January as the community commemorates the biblical story of the visit of the Magi – Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar – to the newborn Jesus in Bethlehem. The 14th annual Three Kings Day, also called El Dia de los Reyes or Epiphany, marks the end of the twelve days of Christmas and commemorates the arrival of the three kings. The holiday is widely observed in many Hispanic communities worldwide. At the celebration, presented by PPL and ArtsQuest, at SteelStacks the holiday maintains its religious roots with contemporary activities blending tradition with modern customs.
The Ozuna family of Bethlehem said they attend this event every year. “We look forward to the food, the music and the camel. It’s one of the best events.” Edwin Rodrieguez agreed. “I look forward to the traditions I remembered as a child, growing up in Puerto Rico”
Participating in this event was Holy Infancy Church, providing traditional food; music was provided by Herencia Jibara; Arts and craft stations provided by Arts Quest Visual Arts Team. The Three Kings (Ramon Rodriguez, Hector Vazquez, and William Cintron) were available for pictures with the children and families. These three kings have participated in this event each year since the first celebration 14 years ago.
A crowd favorite is Einstein the famous “snow camel.”; People gather to touch, pet and have pictures taken with this gentle giant. Known for his walk along RT. 309 in a snowstorm, this is his 7th year at this event. And finally, after the reading of the Biblical 3 Kings’ story by MEGA radio DJ, the toys collected by “Toys for Tots” and were distributed by the Kings and organized by the Allentown Marines, Bethlehem Detachment #284
After a very full day, exhausted children (and parents) agreed that this is a fun event celebrating culture and tradition.
