Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium was home the Bethlehem Holiday Classic last week and Liberty and Freedom wrestlers came away with medal performances from the area’s top holiday tournament.
The Hurricanes finished 17th in the team standings and finished with one medalist with Elijah Heimbach.
Heimbach took fifth at 121-pounds with a fall over Santino Aniska of West Scranton in 2:47. After losing in the second round of the bracket, Heimbach battled back with four straight wins before losing 2-1 in the ultimate tiebreaker of the consolation semifinals to Gabe Benyo of Hazleton to drop him to the fifth place bout.
Freedom finished 22nd in the team standings, but had two medalists, with Daniel Schiffert (HWT) and Nicholas Lyden (152) taking home medals.
Schiffert finished in second with a 4-3 loss to Bradyn McConneha of North Allegheny in the finals.
It marked Schiffert’s (10-1) first loss of the season.
Lyden won his medal round bout following a 9-3 decision over Northwestern’s Chase Sukanick.
Freedom now has a tough week on tap with a meeting against Bethlehem Catholic on Wednesday, followed by a road trip to the Virginia Duals this weekend.
The Hurricanes will get their first major dual meet tests this week as well with bouts against Easton and Northampton on Wednesday and Thursday, before heading to the Virginia Duals on Friday as well.
