LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls enjoyed a busy holiday break

While the boys wrestling scene was busy in Bethlehem with the Holiday Classic at Liberty and the Tony Iasiello Tournament at Bethlehem Catholic, the girls were busy on the mats too.

Freedom just came off a weekend at the Parkland Duals where the team went 1-2.

The Pates lost to Emmaus 42-21 and Pennsbury 45-29, but defeated Delaware Valley 40-34.

Freedom is 2-3 to start the season with matches against Beca and Nazareth on tap this week, but head coach Jeremy Ortiz is happy with where the group is at the moment.

“The team is doing great,” said Ortiz. “There is still plenty of room for improvement but the girls have been working extremely hard so there is a ton of upside for the rest of the season.

The Parkland duals are big for us as far as seeing where we stand with the rest of the Valley. Our goal is to be one of the top teams in the coming years so this was a great challenge for us.”

Liberty (2-2) had a busy holiday stretch with an appearance at the Tony Iasiello Tournament, along with a trip to the Penn Manor New Year’s Rumble last weekend.

The Hurricanes took second at the Iasiello tournament, placing 10 wrestlers and having four finalists.

Ellie Rumbalski (190) took home gold at the event with a fall over Aubrey Davison of Nazareth in 2:33 to take home the only gold medal for the Hurricanes.

Eva Trujillo (124), Lidi Whistleon (142) and Amilex Bernardini (155) all took second at the event.

Trujillo lost to Molly Brangan of Archbishop Ryan 9-7 in the finals, while Whistleon lost by fall in 15 seconds to Northern Lehigh’s Anna Trelease.

Bernardini also lost by fall in 25 seconds to Stroudsburg’s Jordyn Kollien to settle for silver.

Leila Matejcek (106) and Leena Cruz (148) took third, while Angelique Carvalho (118) and Kiya Albus (130) each took fourth.

The Hurricanes rounded out their medalists with Kierha Castillo (136) finishing in fifth and Czarina Gonzalez taking sixth.

At Penn Manor, only two Hurricanes placed with Rumbalski leading the charge with a third place finish at 190 following a fall in 30 seconds over Brianna Szmak of Pocono Mountain West.

Trujillo (124) took sixth following a 9-3 loss to Madison Clark of Pocono Mountain West.

Liberty has dual meets against Easton and Northampton this week.

Bethlehem Catholic came away from their holiday tournament with one medalist in Anna Truscott finishing sixth at 112.

The Hawks travel to Freedom this week and then hit the road again to Pleasant Valley.
