LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Scottish Hogmanay for Yule in third annual “Bethlehem Twelfth Night” at Ice House

The third annual “Bethlehem Twelfth Night Celebration” is at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 3, Charles A. Brown Ice House.

Celtic musical troupe The Chivalrous Crickets & Friends hosts the annual event that bids farewell to Christmastide and welcomes the new year.

Experience the folk magic, mayhem and mystery of an old world Twelfth Night Yuletide celebration, this year with a nod to the Scottish Christmastime holiday of Hogmanay.

Caroling, ceilidh dancing, tunes and songs, storytelling, sweets and cider, masking, trivia game hosted by Steven Bost, children’s games, Lord of Misrule lottery and folk customs of yore await at the event, which is part-show, part-festival and part-large community party.

Join a piping processional; have your New Year fortune read at the “Divination Station,” learn about the ancient custom of Saining, experience a centuries-old mummer’s play replete with sword fights, and beware of Trows, Scotland’s otherworldly Yuletide troublemakers.

From the strange to the hearth-warming, discover the fascinating history of Christmas through the experiential, family-friendly extravaganza.

For centuries after the Reformation, the Scottish Parliament banned the observance of Christmas. From the lowlands to the islands, the Scots transferred their ancient Yuletide practices to the New Year. No one knows where the word Hogmanay came from, but today its traditions are still honored in gatherings.

The “HearthSong Folk Arts: Celebrating Ancient Folk Ways” event at the Ice House blends modern Hogmanay with ancient Scottish Yule, as well as standard-fare Celtic antics and songs for a gathering of holiday merrymaking, mischief and spiritual connection. Wear your favorite fancy or fanciful Christmas garb.

The event includes:

• Celtic music from The Chivalrous Crickets & Piping Processional

• Caroling & Ceilidh dancing

• Old Scots “Guising” Play with sword-fighting

• Customs from the Borderlands to the Shetlands

• Trivia with Steven Bost

• Pass the Parcel children’s game

• Lord of Misrule Lot (Abbot of Unreason in Scotland)

• Poems & lore

• Gaelic drinking songs

• Lobby fun with cider and sweets, crafting and “Divination Station” with Seer Beth. Divination is a New Year’s folk custom in Scotland, traditionally using flame, smoke, water, dice, cards, bones and more to catch a glimpse of one’s future.
