Latin “Three Kings” following star to Bethlehem’s SteelStacks

The “Three Kings Celebration,” presented by PPL and sponsored by B. Braun Medical Inc. and Lagom Care, is at 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 4, ArtsQuest Campus at SteelStacks. Bethlehem.

The 14th event is free and open to the public.

“One of the best ways to end the holiday season is to join us at the ‘Three Kings’ festivities at ArtsQuest. Each year, this tradition is brought to life with the arrival of the Three Kings, Einstein the Camel, gifts for children, traditional Puerto Rican food and Spanish Parranda music,” says Myrna Rivera, Chair of ArtsQuest’s Latin Programming Committee.

“For me, this celebration always brings back amazing memories of holiday family gatherings in our homes,” Rivera says.

“El Dia de los Reyes” (“Three Kings Day”) is a religious and cultural tradition of many Latin American nations. During the “Three Kings Celebration,” there’s a reading of the story of the Three Kings, followed by gift-giving.

There will be arts and crafts, a visit by Einstein the Snow Camel, food for purchase provided by Infancy Church and music. Allentown’s “Marine Toy for Tots” is contributing to the event.

“There’s nothing more intimate to our culture than the celebration of the Three Kings Day. Scripturally and culturally, this traditional festivity is a reminder of the richness of Latin American folklore,” says Miguel Perez-Soto, ArtsQuest Performing Arts Board Member and Sr. Demand Planner at B. Braun Medical.

“Preserving this day brings me back to my days growing up in Puerto Rico and the experience of knowing that under my bed the Magi’s and their ‘co-conspirators,’ the Camels, left a special present that will enlighten my holidays,” Perez-Soto says.

“It is also a time when you can capture the pulse of childhood innocence through the belief in this significant historical and cultural event,” says Perez-Soto.

“Our community will have the opportunity to enjoy this tradition in an ambiance surrounded by presents, traditional food, live music and family. Kudos to ArtsQuest and the Latin Programming Committee for keeping it alive,” says Perez-Soto.

“The Three Kings activity is a cultural and religious celebration commemorating when the Three Wise Men brought gifts to the baby Jesus,” says Iris Cintron, ArtsQuest Latin Programming Committee Member.

“Many children in Latin American countries will receive their Christmas gifts on January 6 as per this tradition. We aim to keep this tradition alive in our young people,” Cintron says.

In the lead-up to Three Kings Day, “Silent Night on the Latin Side” by the Clave Legacy Quintet was presented in a free concert Dec. 20, Palette & Pour, ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks.

“The interpretation of seasonal melodies in Latin rhythms has always captured my attention. This spicy blend of holiday classics in Latin jazz style will surely warm your holidays,” says Miguel Perez-Soto, ArtsQuest Performing Arts Board Member and member of Clave Legacy.

“Clave Legacy [took] the audience through a journey of pure holiday nostalgia with the incomparable sound of congas, timbales and aggressive piano ‘montunos,’ [to] make new season memories and turn their ‘silent night’ into a warm Latin jazz experience,” Perez-Soto says.
