Todora goes 5-0 at King of Mountain
Parkland sophomore Braden Todora hasn’t lost a match all season, winning his first 10 bouts as the Trojans gear up for the Christmas break.
Todora went 5-0 in last week’s King of the Mountain Tournament at Central Dauphin High School to keep his perfect season intact. His first-place finish in the 114-pound weight class was a key part in Parkland placing eighth as a team out of the 32 participating squads.
Todora opened the tournament with a 19-3 technical fall win over Wilson West Lawn’s Aidan Roman in 1:21. He followed that with a major decision 10-1 win over Chestnut Ridge’s Carter Ickes to advance to the championship quarterfinal round.
Michael Johnson of West Allegheny was next in line, and Todora had little trouble advancing to the semifinals; he picked up his second consecutive major decision with a 13-1 win over Johnson.
Todora then picked up yet another major decision over State College’s Noah Young, 19-7, before winning via decision in the championship match over Mifflin County’s Andrew Alexander, 4-1.
Two other Trojans placed in the top five of their respective weight classes: Luis Moya (107 pounds) and Matthew Velez (133).
Moya kicked off the tournament with a quick first-period pin over Central York’s Ethan Ritchey in 1:00. He followed that up with a technical fall over Chambersburg’s Hunter Johnson, 21-5, in 3:35. He then advanced to the semifinals after winning by major decision, 14-4, over Altoona’s Dominic Picciotti.
Despite a hard-fought, close, 4-3 loss against Montoursville’s Branden Eisenhour in the semifinals, Moya remained poised and responded in his consolation semifinals match. Moya earned a 4-2 decision over Wilson West Lawn’s Rhys Schaffer, then took down Quinn Bagnell of Council Rock South, 5-3, in a tiebreaker 1 to finish in third place.
In his first match of the tournament, Velez pinned General McLane’s Marcus Geiser in 3:25. He followed that up with another pin, taking down Canon-McMmillan’s Jon Emma in 2:28.
The Parkland junior then suffered a setback in the quarterfinals, losing by fall against Chestnut Ridge’s Dominic Deputy in the second period. Velez went on two win his next two matches to keep his tournament hopes alive. He first picked up a 7-6 decision win over AJ Snatchko of West Allegheny in the consolation round, then took down Wilson West Lawn’s Charlie Griffin, 5-4, in the next match.
Velez then came up short in the consolation semifinals via a second-period pin against Cranberry’s Aiden Thompson. In his fifth-place match, Velez picked up an 8-3 decision over Canon-McMillan’s Jon Emma.
Jared Santilli placed sixth in the 139-pound weight class, while Jorge Moya placed eighth in the 160-pound bracket.
Parkland also improved to 2-2 in East Penn Conference competition with a dominant 57-11 win over Allen last Wednesday. The Trojans won seven of the 10 contested bouts, as well as three wins by forfeit, to take down the Canaries.
Four Trojans won by fall, including Chase Kruk’s (121 pounds) pin over Daniel Peraza in 34 seconds to give Parkland a 17-0 advantage after three bouts. Velez (133) pinned Aaron Montaro in just 24 seconds two bouts later, Santilli (145) won by fall over Ethan Smyth in 3:20 two bouts after that, and Myles Lysek (285) capped the scoring with a pin over Karl Reed in 3:23 in the final bout.
Todora (114) was one of three Trojans to win by technical fall; his 17-2 victory in 47 seconds over Jacob Baker came in the second bout of the match. Two matches later, Ricard Rivera (127) won by technical fall over Dangel Garcia, 17-1, in 2:24. Donato Ciampittiello (172) picked up his technical fall early in the third period with a 15-0 victory.
Parkland will next compete in the Bethlehem Holiday Classic at Liberty High School on Sunday and Monday.
