Quick starts lead to boys basketball wins

There’s nothing better than a team getting off to a fast start.

The Salisbury boys basketball team opened each of its games with fast starts and that has helped the Falcons get good jump out of the gate for the 2025-2026 season.

Salisbury is 3-0 with a pair on nonleague wins and a victory to start Colonial League play. Salisbury has led at the end of each quarter it has played this season. In their last two games the Falcons led at the end of the first quarter by a combined score of 38-10.

After Julian Makhoul put up 22 points in the season opener, senior Steven Lozada put up 24 points against Lehigh Valley Academy in the second game of the season. In game three the scoring was more balanced with Makhoul and Garrett Leiner leading the team with 14 points each.

The Falcons scored 26 points in the first quarter against the Jaguars for a 26-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter. They never slowed down from there and downed LVA 73-57.

Monday night Salisbury led Palisades 12-3 after one quarter and then opened that up to 25-12 at halftime. The Falcons went on to beat the Pirates 57-39 in their league opener.

The offense has been running well in the early going with four players averaging in double-digits per game. Makhoul (14.33 points per game) and Lozada (14 ppg) are leading the way with both Leiner and Drew Petrie averaging 11.67 ppg.

Up next on the schedule is Jim Thorpe, which lost its first two games of the season and then came back Monday to down Pen Argyl for their first win. After that is a trip to Lehighton whose season has gone the other way with two wins to open the season followed by two losses in league games to even their record at 2-2 on the year. Bangor comes to town next Monday. In two games the Slaters have allowed just 37.5 ppg in per contest, but they’re averaging just 38 ppg in the early going with a 1-1 record.
