PHS ice hockey beats Emmaus

The Parkland High School ice hockey team got into the win column in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Ice Hockey League. After four losses and a tie in their first five games of the season, the Trojans earned their first victory last week with a win over rival Emmaus.

On Monday, Dec. 8, Parkland fell to first-place Northampton 10-1 at the Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink, but followed that last Monday with a dramatic 7-6 win against Emmaus, which Parkland had lost to twice before this season.

In the game with the Kids, Parkland scored its lone goal off the stick of Carter Willis and assisted by Connor Mulhern and Chase Carl, to cut its deficit in half 2-1 in the second period. But Northampton scored three more in the frame and added five in the third. Chase Roberts finished with 30 saves in net. The Trojans were outshot 40-14.

In the victory over the Hornets, Parkland was outscored by one in each of the first two periods, trailing 2-1 after one and 5-3 after two. Then, in a wild third period, Emmaus netted the opening goal of the frame to take a 6-3 advantage, but the Trojans rallied to score four unanswered to finish off the win.

Bryce Haas scored both of his goals in the third, while Jackson Bus and Matthew Torres each found the back of the net once in the frame. Carl also recorded two goals and Sawyer Marsteller added one goal. Each of Torres, Marsteller and Haas dished out two assists and both Carl and Austen Easler contributed one assist.

Parkland is 1-4-1 overall for three points and sit in fourth place out of five teams so far, ahead of Nazareth by two points. The Trojans squared up against Northampton this past Monday night and play the Saints on Friday night at the Steel Ice Center to conclude a two-game week. Next Monday night, the Trojans face Northampton back at BMR.
