Parkland looks to defend D-11 title
The Parkland High School girls basketball team is loaded for another run at postseason championships in the 2025-26 season. A number of players return from last year’s squad that won the District 11 title and advanced to the second round of the state tournament, finishing 20-9 overall.
While graduating players in Delaney Chilcote and Sarah Car from last year are tough losses, some key players back include seniors Isabella Hallal, Aneri McGalla, Addison Fritzinger, Savannah Gonzalez, Kate Blenis, Brooke Ackerman and Haley Hudson; juniors Ariel Brown, Cheryllana Cunningham and Yana Smaltz; along with sophomores Carly Spang and Morgan Volpe.
Parkland returns 12 players from last season’s varsity roster.
“If each player understands their role and if they can play great team defense and share the ball like the teams before them,” said PHS head coach Ed Ohlson. “They will be right there at the end. The team just needs to improve on offensive patience and rebounding.”
Ohlson mentioned a couple of key newcomers that will be counted on to contribute, including senior Katie Sammarco, who sat out last season with an injury, and freshmen Tatiana Rico-Gray and Gwen McWilliams.
Last year, the Trojans responded after a loss to Emmaus in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinals. It marked their third straight loss to the Hornets last season. But after it Parkland went on to run off three consecutive wins in the district tournament, including a victory over Emmaus in the semifinals and win against Easton in the championship game.
The Trojans then beat Downingtown West in the first round of the state tournament before falling to Central Dauphin in the second round.
The EPC is once again set to be a competitive conference with several teams vying for top status.
“The league is strong with teams like Becahi, Dieruff Easton, Emmaus, Nazareth and Stroudsburg,” Ohlson said. “Central Catholic, Liberty and Northampton could also contend.”
