Lloyd, Zephs look to turn it around

As a senior, Whitehall’s Jack Lloyd believes his team’s sluggish beginning this season can be overcome by a sense of familiarity. The Zephyrs began this year with a 2-7 record after a 19-9 campaign last season.

“We have had a slow start to our season,” stated Lloyd. “We faced good competition and have been right there in all of our games. We’ve had a few tough losses at the end of the game. We were able to come out on top against Becahi and Stroudsburg.

“Many of the players on the Whitehall High School varsity team have played together since we were 5- or 6-years-old. We grew up together playing as a team for Hokey. Over the years, we’ve gained good chemistry on the court. Our roles are to do what is needed for the team to win. Sometimes that can change depending on the game situation.”

Lloyd’s role on the team will be to provide offense. He currently is averaging 12 points per contest and leads the team in three-pointers with 19.

Head coach Jeff Jones likes how Lloyd has adapted to a new challenge.

“Jack is one of our primary shooters,” said Jones, recently. “He has a really good feel for the game. Jack has really fit in really well with our group.”

Lloyd, who also plays golf and baseball, has related some of his situations in other sports to his current ones.

“All sports help each other,” noted Lloyd. “Being a multisport athlete is so important. Sports use different muscles, strategies, and disciplines.

“Baseball has blessed me with high pressure situations. Being on the mound up one with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth prepares an athlete mentally that can be translated to any sport, including basketball.

“Our basketball team fights until the end and we always have, even in the days of Hokey baseball and basketball.”

Lloyd plans to attend a college next year to pursue a career in architecture. In the meantime, he plans to make the most of the season ahead.

“I am enjoying every moment,” gushed Lloyd. “I have had a good time at practice with my teammates that I have played with over the last 14 years. This is a great group of friends that I feel honored to compete with.”

Jones expects Lloyd to raise his level of play throughout the remainder of the season.

“We are really happy to have him be a part of this team,” beamed Jones. “We look for some good nights from him as we approach the middle of the schedule.”
