Hornets top Dieruff, fall to Liberty, PHS

The Emmaus High School boys basketball team went 1-2 last week.

In three Eastern Pennsylvania Conference games, the Hornets were defeated by Liberty 63-46 last Tuesday, but responded by taking down Dieruff 78-57 Thursday. Two days later, Emmaus was downed by rival Parkland 64-41.

In the game at the Hurricanes, Emmaus fell behind 22-12 after the opening quarter. The Hornets began to rally in the second quarter, outscoring Liberty 15-11 to go into the locker room at halftime down just 33-27.

The Hurricanes poured it on in the second half, outscoring the Hornets 30-19 to take the game. Lucas Stephan finished with a team-high 18 points, while both Matt Rooney and Noeah Newsome tallied nine points and Jacob Ross scored eight points.

In the victory over the Huskies, Emmaus erased a one-point deficit at halftime with a big rally in the third quarter, outscoring them 24-7 in the deciding third quarter. Ross led all scorers with a game-high 26 points and Stephan tallied 19 points. Ben Grochowski added nine points, while Rooney contributed six and Newsome had five.

In the game with the Trojans, the Hornets trailed by just six after the first quarter and eight at halftime. The second half was a different story, however, as Emmaus was doubled up 34-17. Both Ross and Stephan finished with 10 points to lead the Emmaus offense. Jayden Swan tallied five points, Rooney added four and Newsome three.

Emmaus, which is now 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the conference, is off from competition until the new year.

The Hornets will next be out on the court on Tuesday night, Jan. 6, at Stroudsburg, and then will finish the week at home against Pocono Mountain East on Friday.
