Girls have strong core back

Coming into last fall, the Whitehall girls soccer team knew they didn’t have the numbers, but they certainly had the talent.

Not having a deep team, the Zephs needed to stay healthy to survive in the always-tough EPC.

The girls finished last fall with a 13-5 record before losing in the opening rounds of the EPC and District 11 playoffs to Parkland and Easton, respectively.

Still, head coach Chris Bleam was proud of his team.

“The team had a really solid season,” Bleam said recently. “Our regular season record was 13-5 and overall was 13-7 after losses to Parkland and Easton in the EPC and District 11 playoffs. We were leading the Parkland game 1-0 at half time but they scored two goals from very long range in the second half and 2 more after we pushed players forward late to try to equalize.”

Collene Sommers was named first team all-EPC and first team Lehigh County as well as second team all-state. Cora Musselman was second team in the EPC and first team for Lehigh County. Larken Good was third team for the EPC.

All three of those players are back for the Zephs in the fall of 2026.

“The team looks forward to welcoming some talented, rising 9th graders next year to compliment the seven returning starters and three EPC all stars.

“Sommers was our leading scorer and our most dangerous attacking player. Mussleman was a steady, dependable force in goal and Good demonstrated tremendous versatility playing nearly every position throughout the year and excelling at all of them.”

Despite the numbers, the Whitehall girls competed in every game. And, Bleam was perhaps most proud of the efforts on defense.

“Overall, we played 18 schools, beat 13 of them and lost to only 5,” Bleam said. “We were competitive in all but one game this year but just a few players short of being able to match the depth and talent of the top-five teams in the EPC.

“I was most proud of our improvement defensively this year, allowing far fewer goals than in years past. Unfortunately we were only able to create one goal against those top-five schools and that left us short.”

Juniors Kyla Braun, Olivia Tabarani, Kaila Wexler, Greta O’Brien were all key contributors and will bring a great deal of experience with them for their senior year, Bleam added. Sophomore Jade Snyder was outstanding playing both center forward and center midfield and ninth grader, Nora Schwenck rounded out the team’s typical starting lineup as either a wide forward or outside back.

The team was rounded out by juniors Paula Londono, Laura Corredo; sophomores Makayla Katrib, Salena Habib and freshman Liana Issa, who suffered a late, season-ending injury.

“The team showed improvement throughout the season and earned the most wins for a Whitehall girls soccer team since 2019,” Bleam said. “With several talented players returning and some reinforcements from next year’s ninth grade class, the future looks bright.”

The team will say good-bye to several seniors, including Audrey Muller and Isabella Brogna, who Bleam called consistent performers in the back.

“Muller was particularly effective with her powerful tackling and individual defending skills,” he said.

“Senior Morgan Laub was a steady performer in the center of our midfield playing nearly every minute of every game this season. Her leadership was steady and solid and she has represented our team and school in exemplary fashion throughout her time with us. Senior Emma Potocnie provided solid contributions as a forward and showed tremendous courage returning relatively quickly from a mid season shoulder injury to finish the season strong.”

Sommers led the team in scoring with 50 points this past season, including 20 goals and 10 assists. Laub had 24 points with 10 goals and four assists. They were followed by Good (5-6 16), Potocnie (7-2 16), Snyder (3-5 11) Londono (4-1 9), Nora Schwenck (2-5 9), O’Brien (3-2 8, Tabarani (3-1 7), Issa (2-1 5), Muller (2-1 5), Braun (1-2 4), Habib (2-0 4), Katrib (1-2 3), Wexler (1-0 2), Mussleman (1-0 2).
