Falcons top Moravian, NL
After a home loss to the Bangor Slaters, Salisbury got right back on the winning track. The Falcons are enjoying a week off but have to squeeze in two nonleague games between Christmas and New Years before they return to Colonial League play after the holidays.
Bangor has been following every win with a loss through its first six games. When the Slaters traveled to Salisbury last week they were coming off of a loss. The roller coaster season continued as they downed the Falcons 51-43.
Falcon seniors Steven Lozado and Drew Petrie led the team with 14 points each in the loss.
Coach Jason Weaver and his players weren’t about to let one loss turn into two, and they went to Northern Lehigh and beat the Bulldogs 59-43 two nights after their first loss.
This time, three players were in double digits in scoring with junior Garrett Leiner joining them. Lozada led the way with 18 points, 12 of which came on three-pointers as Salisbury drained 11 points from beyond the arc on the night. Leiner finished with 12 points and Petrie got 11. Leiner hit on three from long distance and Petrie hit two more for the Falcons.
Salisbury then finished its pre-Christmas schedule with a 67-45 win at Moravian Academy.
A key for Salisbury has been a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging double figures through the first eight games.
Lozada leads the way with 15.4 per game and Petrie is at 12.3 points per game this season. Julian Makhoul is averaging 10.7 points per game and Leiner is hitting for 10.1 each night.
The 7-1 overall record has Salisbury sitting in second place in the District 11 4A classification behind 5-0 Northwestern Lehigh.
In the Colonial League, Salisbury is in third place overall and leads the South Division with Southern Lehigh and Catasauqua trying to run them down.
The Falcons play at Hamburg on Saturday before hosting Kutztown on Monday. After a break for New Years, the team is home against Southern Lehigh on Jan. 2.
