Emmaus goes 5-1 at dual tourney

The Emmaus girls wrestling team went 5-1 at the Gettysburg Duals Saturday to improve to 6-1 this season.

Hornet senior Olivya Kroope went 6-0 at the tournament as Emmaus lost it’s opening match to Gettysburg High School 45-30 before beating North Allegheny (36-33), Wilson West Lawn (53-24), Lampeter-Strasburg (60-16) Chambersburg (42-36) and Northern York (45-30).

In the opening match, the Horents’ Brynn Koberlein (136), Kroope (170) and Jocelyn Vargas (190) won by fall, while Kadence Yannotti (148) and Ariana Koberlein (155) won by forfeit.

In round two, Kanval Naveed (106), Haily Laible (142), Kroope (155), Vargas (170), and Nitzana Jamaica (100) earned wins by fall for Emmaus. Ariana Koberlein (148) and Petra Perez (190) earned wins by decision against North Allegheny.

Emmaus trailed 33-30 the Tigers heading in the final bout of the match in which Jamaica earned a pin in 18 seconds to seal the team win.

Emmaus had five pins against Wilson, including Sarah Lysinger (130), Brynn Koberlein (136), Laible (142), Jamaica (100) and Naveed (106). Kroope (155) won by technical fall and Vargas (170) and Mia Rifas (190) picked up wins by forfeit.

The Hornets has two pins and eight wins by forfeit against Lampeter-Strasburg. Laible (142) and Kroope (155) won by fall, while Danielle Rivera (118), Calia Shotwell (124), Sarah Lysinger (130), Brynn Koberlein (136), Ariana Koberlein, Vargas (170), Katherine Brion (235) and Molly Dixon (100) all won by forfeit in the match.

Against Chambersburg, both teams had six pins with the Hornets’ falls coming from Shotwell (124), Laible (136), Ariana Koberlein (148), Kroope (155), Jamaica (100) and Julianna Garcia (118). Naveed (106) got a win by forfeit in the match.

The teams were tied at 36-36 heading in the final bout where Garcia pinned her opponent in 1:09 to secure the win for her team. The final match of the day saw the Hornets win three matched by fall as Brynn Koberlein (136), Laible (142) and Ariana Koberlein (148) all won by fall against Northern York. Kroope (155) earned a win by technical fall and Garcia (118) won by major decision. Dixon (100), Jamaica (106), and Brion (235) picked up wins by forfeit.

The Hornets will travel to Pleasant Valley on Wednesday, Stroudsburg on Saturday and East Stroudsburg South on Monday.

They head to the Governor Mifflin Duals on Dec. 29-30 and compete in the Parkland Duals on Jan. 4. Their next home match is set for Wednesday, Jan. 7 against Nazareth.
