DeVita hits milestone in win
The Emmaus High School girls basketball team heads into the holiday season as t one of just two undefeated teams in the East Penn Conference.
The Hornets took down Liberty 72-40 last Tuesday and then followed that with a 63-44 victory over Dieruff last Thursday. Emmaus capped the week with a 51-45 win against rival Parkland Saturday.
In the victory over the Hurricanes, it was only a four-point game after the opening quarter (14-10), but the - Hornets extended their advantage - by outscoring Liberty 27-16 in the second quarter and were on top 41-26.
Gabby DeVita finished with a team-high 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Gracie Ervin tallied 12 points. Sierra Stevens recorded 11 points and Olive Whitney rounded out the scorers in double figures with 10 points.
It was a special night for DeVita and the program in the win against the Huskies, as the senior eclipsed the 1,000 point milestone, finishing with 13 points. She is just the 12th player in program history to reach the plateau. Emmaus led 31-22 at halftime, but took full control of the game in a third quarter where they outscored Dieruff 19-4.
Whitney netted a team-best 16 points and Ervin added 10 points. Eva Glover contributed nine points.
In what might be their toughest game to date, the Hornets outlasted the Trojans in a matchup of undefeated teams in the conference.
Emmaus had to come from behind as it trailed 15-9 after the first quarter, but tied the score at 25-25 at halftime. The Hornets carried the momentum into the third quarter as they pushed their lead into double figures and then held on late.
DeVita led all scorers with 19 points and Ervin scored 12 points. Glover contributed eight points, while Stevens added seven.
Emmaus, which improved to 7-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference, will break for about a week for Christmas and then will be back on the court a couple of days before the new year, competing in the Easton High School Rotary Club Tournament next Monday and Tuesday. The Hornets will face Executive Education Academy Charter School on Monday and then have another game the following day against a team yet to be determined.
