Explorer Post 101 holds holiday display

Explorer Post 101 members and advisers operate an elaborate holiday model railroad display on the second floor of Coplay Borough Hall, 98 S. Fourth St. The display features two large HO-scale layouts.

Post advisers Mike Busch and Lisa Lance were clearly excited about the size of the display, as people filed through the complex exhibit Dec. 20, 2025.

Katie and Kevin Miller were there to see the display with their two young children, Layla and Travis, watching the eight trains navigate the bends and tunnels of the miniature landscape. When asked, the kids said they were ready for Christmas.

The elaborate train set up was first put together in 1976 by Dick Lobach in Allentown. Its home moved a couple of times until it traveled to and arrived in Coplay Borough Hall in 2000. Busch said he is happy and grateful with the Post’s relationship and support from Coplay Borough.

Explorer Post 101 has about 15 members and several advisers. The Post covers a wide range, with some from Coplay, Northampton, Catasauqua, Hamburg and the Poconos.

The Scouts and leaders staffing the display Dec. 20, 2025, were Kazen Read; Hunter Bixler; Busch, head adviser; Lance; and Matthew Sabastionelli.

Explorer Post 101 holds various youth programs, often affiliated with law enforcement and fire departments. They offer young people aged 14-21 hands-on experience in public safety, leadership training and community service.

The Post is affiliated with Scouting America. It is a distinct part of Scouting, focusing on career education with local businesses and organizations.

The holiday model railroad display will be open 7-9 p.m. Jan. 2 and noon-4 p.m. Jan. 3 and 4. There is no cost to visit the display, but donations are accepted.
