Hokendauqua Trout Unlimited: Beginner’s fly-tying course to soon start

Hokendauqua Trout Unlimited is offering its beginner’s fly-tying course once again. The course is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays in January and February 2026.

This year, the course is being offered free of charge to all participants.

Please arrive by 8:45 a.m. to sign in as the class will start promptly. The course is currently held in the cafeteria of Northampton Area Middle School, 1617 Laubach Ave., Northampton.

For eight consecutive Saturday mornings, there will be instruction on the tying of two different flies each week.

Materials and a manual are given to each student. A step-by-step video presentation on the tying of each fly is shown before the students start tying. Then, an instructor will demonstrate each step. Additionally, more instructors will be on hand to offer personal assistance to those students who request more guidance.

Loaner tool kits are available, or you can bring your own.

Instructors have had anywhere from 15 to 30 students of all ages.

With the instructions received, a student should be able to tie almost any fly.

Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and doughnuts are available for free.

A raffle is held each week. Tying materials, tying tools and books are some of the items that will be raffled off.

Proceeds benefit stream restoration projects.
