FHS boys top WHS

Freedom’s boys swim team closed out 2025 with a 107-69 victory over Whitehall on Dec. 18 at Freedom.

“They did great today,” said Freedom swim coach JJ Apostolico. “They were helped by Cody (Smith) going unopposed in diving (339.85 points). He could’ve beat anybody today. He was very, very good. But the boys, in general, from top to bottom, all swam well. They really got after their swims today. They were aggressive, and we’ve been working on getting over the fear of falling apart at the end of our races and allowing ourselves the ability to have good times by being aggressive at the beginning of our races, and we’re starting to see that pay off. The boys really exemplified that today.”

Asa Lawser, Ben Rader, Joseph Volkert, and Aiden Schankel opened the boys side of the meet with a 1:56.39 win in the 200 medley relay.

Antonios Tatakis won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.76, Griffin Kleinle took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.30, and Tatakis won the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.94.

“I was really stressing on this one because I kept on getting 59.00 or 1:00.00, so 58.94 was surprising since I came off a big meet last weekend, so it was an accomplishment, I would say,” Tatakis said. “I could tell (I was ahead) because I was like, is there anyone next to me? It felt very good. I consider it my favorite event, and I’m going to work hard over the Christmas break to come back stronger.”

Kleinle placed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:23.44 and then anchored the winning 200 free relay team of Tatakis, Schankel, and Rader with a time of 1:40.99.

Lawser was the 100 backstroke winner with a time of 1:05.57, Rader won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.80, and Tatakis, Gabriel Maldonado, Volkert, and Kleinle took first place in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:49.34.
