CHS will need to replace seniors
After a 5-12-1 season last year, Catasauqua’s girls’ soccer team had high aspirations about the season. They had a slight improvement from their 3-14-1 mark the previous season, and new head coach Dave Harth was anxious to inject a new environment and culture.
The Roughies began last season with two wins in their first three games. However, they couldn’t maintain their momentum and dropped their next nine contests.
From there, they rebounded with a 3-2-1 slate over their last six games to further heighten expectations.
Harth welcomed back seniors Julia Harth, Eva and Mia Gomes, Erianna Vazquez, Hailey Cedeno, and goalkeeper Brooke Barna as a veteran core to help solidify the roster. Barna made over 100 saves last season. Juniors Uyen Ly and Ana Rodriguez-Ramos were returning juniors who both provided more support.
However, the Roughies’ season followed a similar script.
Catty defeated Jim Thorpe, 4-0, in their second game, but they dropped their next 14 games.
The Roughies ended the season with a 1-0 victory over Dieruff and finished with a 2-15 slate. Harth scored the winning goal, and she and Mia Gomes were the team’s leading scorers.
Inconsistencies and injuries filled their season.
“It was a tough season in the win-loss column,” offered Harth recently. “But the girls played hard, had fun and worked through some big injuries.”
Harth confirmed that Barna broke her thumb, and she may also have suffered a torn ACL. Her loss proved to be monumental to the team.
“Losing Brooke was a big,” added Harth. “We had to use four different goalies after she was hurt.”
Harth also noted the team lost Eva Gomes to an ACL injury and Cedeno missed significant time with an ankle injury.
Despite losing a number of seniors, Harth will welcome back a number of rising sophomores and juniors next season.
